So, you think that the debate surrounding the landfill user
fees was over? Think again.
Recently, a County Ratepayer, one that
has paid their fee to use the landfill, observed a truck inside the Transfer
station on 777 or the Onoway location for those not familiar with the road
numbers.
Why is this an issue you ask? Well, the landfill is not
open at that location on Sundays.
When the astute Ratepayer observed,
followed and approached the operator of the vehicle, they were told that it is
not a big deal, he works for the COUNTY!!!! Does not live in the County,
but works for the County.
The Ratepayers also contacted the bylaw
enforcement and was told by that individual that he also has a key and does the
same thing!
Apparently if you have a certain number of a key, you can
access these facilities after hours. A few things come to mind
here.
As potentially some are not County residents as this individual was
not, they have not paid for the use of the landfill which means you and I have
footed the bill for their waste. In addition, they have also created a
liability situation for us as County residents and Ratepayers.
LSARA has
repeatedly requested information on the collection of the supposed data for the
changes in the charges for the use, how they are tracking, who is paying what
charges and why. For example,
- Is the regular household paying the same as a
commercial individual that puts forward construction waste?
- How are they
managing the people that are still not paying and using the landfill?
- What about the neighbor that loads up all of his friends garbage so he or she
doesn't have to pay lets say if they are in a summer village that does not have
access to the landfill without paying per use?
This is a very flawed system
that once again was rolled out and not thought out.
LSARA will be asking
why it is that County employees have keys to the landfills and can use it at
their convenience. We would strongly suggest that you do likewise.
