Bio for Mel Fundytus Division 2

My name is Mel Fundytus and I am seeking a seat on Lac Ste. Anne County Council, Division 2

I am married with 2 children and 3 grandchildren. I have lived all of my adult life in rural Alberta, First in Sturgeon County and now in Lac Ste. Anne County

I have owned and managed my own businesses since 1989, as well as coaching and volunteering on various boards. I have also been involved with negotiating contracts, organizing personnel, developing, and implementing projects to completion.

Over the last number of years I have seen and been involved with a number of things that disappoint and concern me greatly. I am very tired of getting a different answer for the same question. As a ratepayer we see and experience things that are out of our control. Council should no longer be making decisions without actively listening to, or ignoring the very source that matters.

Lac Ste. Anne County Council should be:

  •  Listening to the concerns and needs of residences and ratepayers.
  •  Obtaining complete and accurate information from other sources before making a decision.
  •  Asking the right questions and more importantly, listening to the answers.
  •  Developing good clear policies and directions so council’s employee, “The Chief Administration Officer”, can use these tools to direct the many good people within the administration and employees of this County.
We as a County, through the better leadership of council, have to create change for fairness and prosperity. As we see more and more people moving to this County seeking a rural lifestyle, we have to create and implement plans to give everyone a quality of life, for both Division 2 and for Lac Ste. Anne County without increasing taxes.
  • We have to attract businesses to come here
  • We have to make this County a desirable place to live. Transparency and Consistancy Fairness and Accountability
  • We have to sustain or improve conditions for agriculture.
  • We have to attract Industry to locate here.
We must            Spend Less and Spend Smarter

We have to        Manage and reduce the huge debt

We require        Better Infrastructure

We need to         Improve Services
We need             Less Rules and Regulations

This is a huge undertaking and I believe I can help do this.

I am in a position to devote the time required to work hard for the Ratepayers and, along with the rest of Council, help Lac Ste. Anne County grow, change, and become a better place for all concerned.

Transparency and Consistency
Is the Start Towards
Fairness and Accountability

My short term goal is to meet as many of Division 2 residents as I can. I will also be respecting your privacy and not entering a property with a closed gate, but will leave my literature if possible.

My long term goal, if elected, is to pursue change.

Feel free to contact me with your concerns:

Please help me - help you. Come vote on October 16, 2017

Bio for Corinne Feth Nominee School Trustee Ward 1

My name is Corinne Feth and I am here to ask you to let me serve as your Ward 1 Northern gateway Trustee. I was raised in Onoway and graduated from Onoway High School in 1984. I have two boys who also attended Onoway school. Like all of you, I have a great interest in the success of our school district.

A key issue for school boards is to create a long-term vision, that provides the essential opportunities students need to reach their full potential. I believe that northern gateways has amazing teachers and staff working with your children. Education takes place in the classroom and the boards efforts must focus on enhancing and enriching what goes on there.

As a school board we must be receptive and responsive to students, parents ,staff and the community at large. As a trustee I promise to be accessible and willing to take input from all groups and weigh all the facts before making decisions.

I know I will have a lot to learn and become familiar with Division policies and procedures and to Stay current with educational issues and trends. I like to thank you all for coming out and take the time to get to learn about your future Trustees.

Bio for Sarah Healy Nominee School Trustee Ward 1

Life for me began on a farm in Consort, a rural farming community in east central Alberta. I married my husband Ralph in 1973 and embarked on a course in education at the University of Alberta majoring in elementary education. After graduation in 1980, I began my teaching career in Ponoka, Alberta but family employment led me on a new adventure and pathway in my teaching career.

Onoway became my home in 1986 when I accepted a music teaching position at Onoway Elementary School. It wasn’t long before some of my other teaching loves began to emerge. As music classrooms are inclusive by nature, I had opportunity to work with all students, many with diverse and varied learning needs. Eventually, my teaching duties moved into a classroom working with diverse learners supporting their learning needs and then branched out to include facilitating supports and strategies for teachers with inclusive classrooms. In 2009, my duties expanded when I took a position at Northern Gateway Public Schools’ division office as Student Services Coordinator supporting principals, teachers and students in 18 schools from Onoway to Valleyview. Providing high quality learning opportunities was always paramount in my educational journey.

In 2014, I became a Northern Gateway Public Schools retiree but soon other opportunities beckoned. In 2016, I became a member of the Community and Social Services Appeal Panel for North Central Alberta in which I currently still serve.

I have 3 daughters, a son-in-law and grandson that are actively pursuing their own careers and interests.

In deciding to put my name forward as a nominee for school trustee in Ward 1, I realized I am still passionate about quality student-centered education and how important the role our families and communities play in that education. I bring 30 years of teaching experience to the position of trustee working with students, staff, parents, divisional leadership, governmental departments and community agencies.

I have been a community member in the Onoway area for many years and if elected as school trustee, would be accountable to the students and families that serve this community.

Bio for Nick Gelych Division 2

My name is Nick Gelych and I am vying for a seat on Lac Ste. Anne County Council, representing Division 2.

My vision for Lac Ste. Anne County is that we are a municipality that has a vital agricultural sector and one that is moving forward with economic development, while developing a long-term, sustainable and strategic direction for the future.

I was raised on a farm just east of Smoky Lake, Alberta. After graduating from high school in Smoky Lake I worked for a short time in Edmonton. For the next 38 years I worked for ATCO Electric in a variety of roles and locations throughout Alberta and the Northwest Territories. I began as a groundman on a construction crew and after a few months, I started on as Lineman in Hay River, NWT. Throughout my career I strategically took on positions with increased responsibility, retiring as Regional Manager for the South East Region in 2012.

Throughout my employment, I gained leadership skills, financial and project management skills, managed multi-million dollar budgets, Human Resource development and allocation, strove for superior customer service, served as a strong advocate for an improved safety culture and most importantly, developed positive and productive working relationships with stakeholders and key influentials. I believe, these skills along with others, are directly applicable for the role as County Councilor.

After retiring from ATCO Electric, my wife and I now own and operate Spectrum Auctioneering and focus primarily on helping to fundraise for non-profit charity organizations.

I have extensive experience in community involvement and have served on boards and committees, such as, Town Councilor for the Town of Valleyview; President of the Valleyview & Smoky Lake Chambers of Commerce; Member/President of various service clubs in the communities I have resided in; Member of Rotary Clubs of Drumheller & Lloydminster; current member of the Alberta Auctioneers’ Association; current member of the Onoway Fish & Game Association; current member of LSARA (Lac Ste. Anne & Communities Ratepayers Association).

My wife, Gerri, was born and raised on a farm south west of Cherhill and graduated from Sangudo High School. Together we have six children, eighteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.

As a council member, my goal will be to represent the constituents of Division 2, while working together with all of Council to strengthen and enhance the entire County of Lac Ste. Anne. We need to ensure that all voters in this County have the opportunity to be heard. There is a need for proper and adequate communication and transparency on all issues of concern to ratepayers. I will work with the other elected officials to ensure that the municipal bylaws and policies, along with administrative policies and procedures are in place to implement the decisions of council, resulting in County Administration acting on that direction. We need to also work collaboratively with other municipalities to ensure a viable and sustainable long-term economic development plan and in the best interests of all. I will ensure the accountability and transparency of the operations of the Municipality, including the activities of Council and senior management.

My interest in becoming Councilor for Division 2 is to make the County of Lac Ste. Anne a desirable place for agriculture to succeed, business to prosper, and families to call home by bringing renewed leadership, energy, and ideas.

This upcoming election gives you an opportunity to address that change and I am up for the challenge.

I am asking for your support on October 16th – please vote.

Bio for R.O. (Bob) Clark Division 2

All of my grandparents emigrated from Scotland in the early 1900’s and settled southwest of Stony Plain. Being one of the older siblings meant that I inherited many off the farm duties even after my parents moved to the city. It is therefore logical that my favorite pastime is gardening, closely followed by auto restoration, camping, fishing and most outdoor sports.

My loving companion of many years Lorinda, along with our two small dogs and four cats, make for a fun and happy lifestyle. We have built an ecosystem on our acreage that helps to replace the areas destroyed by human interference and the necessity of ongoing development. Numerous birds, bees and wildlife animals constantly prune our trees, enjoy the garden and nest or reside within eyesight.

As a resident of Division 2 for over 30 years I am very close to the real feelings of the people within this and surrounding divisions. My experience as a small business owner, construction superintendent, NAIT Instructor and trades person helped guide me as a previous Councillor for Division 2. I found that this position requires a lot of one’s time and I believe it takes about a year and a half for a successful candidate to fully understand the workings and legal obligations that you assume upon becoming a Councillor.

Hopefully changes are on the way. With the current vacancies at least two new Councillors will be elected. Should all of Council be changed then I believe that Administration would be totally running Council until those new Councillors become confident and experienced.

In the past I have sat on many committees, chaired an International Car Show for thirty three years, volunteered for many organisations and am a proud member and Director of the Onoway, Branch #132 Royal Canadian Legion. As of September 2017 my time will be totally devoted to the residents of Division 2 concerns. Should you wish to talk with me after the nomination date of Sept 18th please feel free to do so (Bob Clark 780-967-3640). By law this is the date that one can start campaigning, advertising, placing signs, etc,

My platform would be to help Council get back on track. Administration should realize the pitiful conditions of its roadway infrastructure. Highly travelled roads which were, in the past, paved with cold mix and subdivision roadways have deteriorated drastically. County ditches are in need of brushing and cutting. Municipalities within LSAC are dissatisfied with the relationships they have with both the Administration and Council. This has to change.

One has only to start a conversation to realize that the residents of LSAC are upset with the current Council. In order for change to occur the residents must rise up and use their ability to vote. Most of us have lost a family member or friend in the past to ensure that we have the right to vote. The Municipal level is where one can support their constituents without having to vote on a party line. This is where democracy is true and I would consider it a privilege should you vote for Bob Clark on October 16th, 2017.

Bio for Brad Javorsky Division 2

My name is Brad Javorsky, lifelong resident of Lac Ste. Anne County and Division 2.

I along with my wife, Brittany, daughter Lena, and my dad, Marvin, operate a mixed farming operation started by my great- grandparents in 1932.

I believe that our county is facing a set of serious problems and challenges that will require well thought out ideas and solutions. We must change the way we govern this county from a top down approach to a bottom up one. I believe I have a plan to get our municipality back on track and to bring business and agriculture investment back to our county.

Council must learn to exercise restraint and ask the necessary questions to not only the county manager, and other administrative officials, but also to other council members. Council has demonstrated over not only the last four years, but also previous to that, that they are unwilling to submit themselves to the people of Lac Ste. Anne County, that must immediately stop.

We have an opportunity to take Lac Ste. Anne county to new heights and to set the standard when it comes to how municipal government works in Alberta. I believe that we have only two choices in this election and that is whether we continue down the path we are on, or to reverse course and completely change the way we govern this county and lay everything on the table. The days of government sacred cows are over and as result we must have Councillors that are willing to ask not only hard questions but also to have hard questions directed and asked of themselves.

That is why I am running for council in Division 2, because I am willing to stand up for all this and more because this county is my home and you must defend your home. I would very much appreciate your support on election day.

Bio for George Vaughan Division  3

I was born and raised in the Onoway area and graduated from Onoway High School. To further my education, I attended Red Deer College and completed an apprenticeship becoming a Journeymen Sprinkler Fitter.

In 1972, I married Brenda Wood of Rich Valley. Together we had three sons who all reside in the County of Lac Ste Anne with our seven grandchildren.

I have lived in the Rich Valley Area for over 40 years. My working years started young as I began working at area farms by the age of 13. After school and weekends, I worked at the local Onoway stores and the butcher shop. Over time, I had many types of employment ranging from driving a gravel truck at Steele Bros Pits , sprinkler fitting, owner operator of the Imperial Oil Bulk Station in Onoway, three years in the North West Territories driving water truck. Ten more years with the Department of Highways from Glenevis and another 20 years in the oilfield sector ranging from driving grader to supplying rigs.

Boy Scouts was a very big part of my life both as a young man and later as an adult leader. Additional volunteer time was with the Board of Directors for Rich Valley Agricultural Society, the Historical Society in Rich Valley and a member of the Lions Club in Onoway.

My objective in seeking your votes as a councillor in Division 3 is to bring honesty, accountability and transparency back to the Ratepayers. I am a member of LSARA and plan to stay in touch with the Ratepayers and be accountable. We need a change and I want to be a part of that change. Please remember to vote as this is the way to change Council. We need answers to questions and not excuses.

Thank you
George Vaughan

Bio for Daryl Friesen Division 4

Since 2011, my wife Judy and I live on an acreage at Lessard Landing. Our son, Jeff, lives in California and our daughter, Jennifer, lives on an acreage just north of St. Albert.

We have 6 grandchildren, 2 dogs, a cat and 8 chickens. I was raised on a farm in north western Saskatchewan and I'm still a farm boy at heart.

After some time at the U of S, I joined the family business, a John Deere dealership in Meadow Lake, SK. After 10 tough years in the Ag industry through the 80's, we had to close the doors in 1990. I then managed a business development centre for 5 years before moving to Alberta in 1995. I was the President of Flexxaire Manufacturing until 2008 when I moved over to Metal Fabricators and Welding Ltd., where I am still their Vice President and General Manager. Judy is the Associate Registrar at the College of Paramedics in Sherwood Park.

My plan is to take my business experience to Council and bring some business sense to running the County. With my farming background, I will be very sensitive to the needs of farmers in this County as well. As a member of LSARA, my platform is to be totally transparent, honest and probably most importantly, I'll listen to the ratepayers. I believe in accountability. Employees have to be accountable to Council and Council must be accountable to the ratepayers. If I am elected to represent the ratepayers in Zone 4, I will continue to attend the LSARA meetings to ensure that I stay in tune to the needs and wishes of all County residents.

Bio for Michael Hindes Division 4

My name is Michael Hindes

and I am running for Division 4 Councillor. I have been a resident of Lac Ste Anne County for 20 years. Along with my wife Trinity and our 2 dogs Molson and Maverick. I am originally from Airdrie, Ab, I moved up in 1997 to help my cousin Jason with farming.

I graduated from high school in Sangudo and attended Post-Secondary education at SAIT, were I received my journeyman Heavy duty mechanic ticket. I have travelled all over western and northern Canada, while moving drilling rigs and pursuing my trade. I have recently become self-employed working for and with the community, with my company Iron Wing Mechanical.

While living in the county I have been a part of the Sangudo Legion, I was the vice president for a while. I also was a part of the Sangudo beautification with building the skate park and the playground. Now that I am home more I look forward to being a part of more community events as well.

My reasons for running for council are to give the rate payers a voice, and a different outlook. I plan to listen and provide honest answers to the best of my ability. I believe that my age will be an asset to council as I have a different outlook for our County that I believe the rate payers will relate to. I feel as though it is time for a change, and for the rate payers voices to be heard. Council is supposed to work with and for the rate payers. We need to grow with the times, but still need to stay true to the values of Farmers, businesses, and the people of our County.

Bio for Joe Blakeman Division 5

Personal
My family settled into the Lac Ste. Anne area in 1905 where they chose to set down their roots to raise their children, work, make lifelong friends and most importantly get and stay involved in their community. My path has not strayed far from that of my family. I was born in 1966, attended Darwell Elementary School from Kindergarten to Grade 8, graduated from Onoway Junior/Senior Highschool in 1984 and still live on the quarter section of my family’s original homestead. I have worked for our family water well business since an early age and attended Red Deer College where I received my Journeyman Ticket in 1992. I took over the management of the family business after the passing of my father in 2005. My significant other, Wendy, of 11 years and I have a blended family consisting of five beautiful young ladies and one gentleman with all of them graduated except for one going into grade 12 this year in Onoway. Wendy and I have run a cow/calf operation in the past, but for now just keep a few horses on our land for some recreational riding. As time and work and volunteering allow, I like to quad, snowmobile, golf, curl and play ball, something I also watch my children excel at.

Professional

I am a former County Councillor of 6 consecutive years, holding the Deputy Reeve seat for 5 of those years. I was a member and Chairman of the Ag Services Board and was Chairman of the local Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) Board. I am proud to count myself among the founding members and Chairman of the North 43 Lagoon Commission and a founding member on the West Inter Lake District (WILD) Regional Water Services Commission, being instrumental in getting both of these regional municipal projects off the ground floor. As my previous term on Council ended, I continued to stay engaged in the public and municipal sectors through a series of government relations and consulting services projects including contract work with Progressive Waste Management and most recently, consulting to FortisAlberta providing government relations. I have spent the last 3 years mostly dealing with the members of the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties (AAMDC) and a few smaller Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) members and local groups like Ste. Anne Natural Gas Co-op where I sit as one of an elected 9-member board.

Volunteer
I am proud to be a long-standing volunteer within the communities of Lac Ste. Anne spending many past years on the Alberta Beach Volunteer Fire Department and with the Alberta Beach Lions Club. I have also coached baseball for over 25 years and am currently the President of the Alberta Beach & District Amateur Softball Association (ABADASA), a group that has given back to the greater Lac Ste. Anne area communities as a result of funds raised through ball and golf tournaments. Over the last 3 years, this small, community-minded group has raised and donated over $55,000 dollars which includes a $15,000 dollar donation to the Darwell Ball Diamonds just this year.

Vision for the Future

My family and I have deep roots in Lac Ste. Anne County and I would like the County to move forward in a positive direction. I recognize that being elected at the municipal level means not only working with and for the ratepayers, but also working with community groups, recreation groups, business, industry, Northern Gateway Public Schools, Provincial and Federal Governments, and all the various stakeholders that make up the County as a whole. I understand that the County is a large municipality with many diversities from one end to the other, where each needs to be dealt with accordingly and not rolled into a pan and baked. What is good for the people of Stanger and area might not be good for the people from around the Heatherdown area, or for Division 5 residents for that matter. I believe that the “tail-wagging-the-dog” at the County office is the biggest reason there is no transparency and this needs to change. I believe that in order to drive economic development, you need services, some of which a few of the County’s neighbors have (water, sewer for example). I envision the County as a collaborative region allowing it to grow as a community and a good neighbour, where families and businesses want to move to and not from.

Bio for Amy Thiessen-Roy Division 5

Hi! My name is Amy Thiessen-Roy. I will be running in division 5. My family and I have lived in Lac Ste Anne County for the last 6 years. I have three children, ranging in age from preschool to high school.

I have been quietly watching and listening for the last year, and recently decided to throw my hat in the ring. There is a noticeable lack of female representation in Lac Ste Anne County.

Through my research, I've found studies are showing that diversity improves effectiveness. Having women on council means councils discuss more viewpoints. The UN recommends that women should hold 30% of elected seats for a government to reflect women's concerns. I am hoping I can help fill that void, and encourage other women to step up as well!

Before I was a stay at home mom to my younger two, I worked in accounting. I'd like to use my love of numbers to benefit the people in our county.

As a young parent I feel I have a voice that should be heard. I have a vested interest in the future of Lac Ste Anne County, I fully intend to stay here till my children are grown and beyond.

Bio for Leo Blais Division 5

My name is Leo Blais and I am vying for a seat on Lac Ste. Anne County council, representing Division 5.

My wife Anita and I have owned property in Warwa Estates for over 22 years, developing the properties and enjoying the amenities the county offers. We fell for the area and subsequently built a house which we live in full time. I want to help grow Lac Ste. Anne County into an area to invest in, to ensure a vibrant agricultural sector, to establish businesses, to live in and to develop as a year-round recreational destination.

I was raised in Bonnyville, AB where I lived till my teens, at which time my family moved to Edmonton. I graduated from high school in Edmonton, and then enrolled in the information technology (IT) program at NAIT. My first job in IT was with Imperial Oil, then spanned 39 years working in several industry sectors including energy, education, utility companies and global consulting organizations. My technical background includes telecommunications, networking, enterprise and distributed computing. For the last 18 years I served in senior management roles for Fujitsu Consulting and EDS (now Hewlett Packard), both large global companies. These leadership roles involved delivery oversight for hundreds of consultants working across multiple provinces. Sectors served included banks, agriculture (AFSC), forestry, utilities and several provincial government ministries. Throughout my career I continued my education including completion of management and supervisory development extension programs at the U of A.

I gained life-long skills including leadership and project management while managing multi-million dollar budgets, providing excellent customer service and most importantly, developing positive and productive work relationships. These skills along with many others are directly relevant for the role of a municipal councilor.

I serve as a board member on the Warwa Estates Association, responsible for development of our subdivision and communication with the County. I am also a member of LSARA.

As a council member, my focus will be to ensure all constituents and rate payers have a voice, are listened to and provided answers. I will work hard with other council members to reestablish an accountability framework which has County Administration taking direction from Council and Council being accountable to the voters and rate payers. Lac Ste. Anne County is but one municipality in this area. To grow economically and be an attractive area for businesses and to live in, it is imperative we cooperate and “work-together” with other counties, hamlets, towns, villages and their supporting agencies. As a council member I will endeavor to make this a priority. This County needs new ideas and leadership and the upcoming election provides the opportunity to effect change. Please vote!

Bio for Terry Nelson Division 6

I have been an active community-minded resident of Lac Ste Anne all of my life. This involvement includes previous municipal government experience, 4-H Clubs, and President of the Mayerthorpe Legion. Currently, I co-manage a multi-generational farm with my son, Jeff.

We need to make substantial changes to meet the challenges of our future. My hope is to wisely manage our growth in Lac Ste Anne by:
  • Bringing democracy back to the municipal level where resident’s ideas and concerns are heard and listened to. One example would be to reinstate the Divisional Ratepayer and Annual County Ratepayer meetings.
  • Taking back control of the decision-making process.
  • Dialoguing and improving intra-municipal cooperation within the county. The past history of confrontation and posturing must stop.
We need to address infrastructure concerns; i.e. road conditions and maintenance, overhead costs and redundancy in personnel positions. We need to seek out advice from experts who are available to us rather than hiring consultants. In short, we need the county to work harder and smarter.

Council must take the lead and earn back the trust of our residents by openness and clarity. I intend to work hard to meet these goals. I will endeavor to be a strong voice on County Council and for Division 6.

I appreciate your consideration, but more importantly, I urge you to vote and be part of the democratic process.

Thank you.

Bio for Larry Daniel Division 7

Hello Lac Ste Anne residents, I would like to introduce myself as Larry Daniel. I will be running for Division 7 Councillor of Lac Ste Anne County. I have been a resident in our county for 5 years, in doing so I have not only made Lac Ste Anne my place of residence but also a place where I have started and grown our family and our business. I believe Lac Ste Anne possesses the resources to grow, prosper and offer families a unique area to reside in Alberta.

For 12 years I ran a public horse racing stable (standardbreds), although a tough business, I managed to raise and support my family. The racing business is dependent on wise and well thought out choices, as bad decisions are not only costly but can put you out of business in a flash. The owners are dependent on you to invest their money wisely for them, so trust needs to be built up. It can humble a person very quickly. Unfortunately I had to leave the racing business as the race track slot revenue was to be removed from horse racing thus forcing me to take other career paths.

For 5 years I worked at Metal Fabricators and Welding as a welder/fabricator. During my time with Metal Fabricators and Welding I was shop steward for 4 years for my fellow workers. During that time I negotiated 2 contracts and handled many various concerns and issues for my co-workers. I was elected to this position as my co-workers learned that I am a person who is dedicated to ensuring myself and my fellow co-workers would be well represented and that they could place their trust in me to dedicate myself to fight for our rights. In that time frame with Metal Fabricators and Welding, I also was on the health and safety committee for 3 years representing any concerns for safety issues expressed by my fellow coworkers. Although I enjoyed my position, I left Metal Fabricators and Welding to pursue my own business venture.

We purchased a 10 acre property in Lac Ste Anne County in 2015 to develop an organic produce business “Daniel Organics”, to supply grocery stores and to fulfill needs at local farmers markets with certified organic produce. It is a family run business with my wife Cassandra, our 6 yr. old son and my two older sons, Larry and Henry, who work on the farm also. My major roles are marketing, and securing contracts with various organic grocers in the greater Edmonton Area. Through hard work and determination we have doubled our business in 2017.

While I believe a person should work hard and never give up, there will always be bumps and ruts in your way but my motto is to work as hard as you can and believe in yourself and you will succeed.

In closing to all Lac Ste Anne residents I want you to know I believe in Lac Ste Anne County and I will put all my efforts to be the voice for the residents of division 7 and all county residents. A county where the voice of residents are heard and respected.
